Plant Production Technician

The Plant ProductionTechnician will play a pivotal role in managing the greenhouse operations in Des Moines, Iowa. This role will manage all aspects of plant growth and well-being insuring timely and quality plant products for the plant breeding and field agronomist. The incumbent will be an active member of the breeding and selection section of the Specialty Crops Team and will report to the Plant Production Associate of Specialty Crops.

What you’ll be doing:
Provide daily care for all plants grown in the greenhouse in Des Moines, Iowa. Duties include watering, fertilizing, pruning, and spraying of pesticides.
Routine greenhouse environmental monitoring ensuring growing conditions are adequate for the plants and appropriate changes are being conducted by season.
Ensures that the outdoor nursery is up kept including irrigation, fertilization, and weeding.
Perform crop production duties including sowing seed, transplanting, propagation and harvesting.
Organize plants according to experiments and adequately label them in the greenhouse.
Ensure adequate seed germination and success of plant cuttings.
Ensure proper fertilization schedules and appropriate watering techniques are followed.
Continuous monitoring of EC and pH levels of growing media.
Ability to do routine mathematical calculations for mixing of fertilizer and pesticides.
Follow integrated pest management strategies insuring adequate pesticide spray rotation and proper greenhouse sanitization are being conducted.
Identify and release beneficial insects as needed to combat western flower thrips, two spotted spider mites, etc.
Maintain a growing environment free of disease and insect pests.
Insures that the greenhouse stays clean including free of clutter, weeds, and algae.
Insure adequate and timely ordering of greenhouse supplies such as soil, trays, pots, pesticides, and other maintenance supplies.
Propagation of plants for field planting.
Ability to keep precise records of fertilization and pesticide inputs.
Assist with micro-propagation and tissue culture projects.
Assist the team members with sample collection in the greenhouse and the field. Assist the team members with sample processing and packaging as needed.
Work in various climate conditions including extreme heat and cold temperatures.
Operation of freeze driers and basic mechanical knowledge to ensure various equipment function properly.
Ability to follow directions and change working pace as work load changes.
Required to work on rotational on call schedule
What we require of you:
A minimum of an A.A.S Degree in Commercial Horticulture or related field from a U.S. college or university.
A minimum of 2-4 years of practical experience in greenhouse conditions and management.
A working knowledge and familiarity with greenhouse growing conditions and operations.
Ability to pay attention to detail.
High energy level, strong self-motivation and a high degree of problem solving skills.
The ability to work alone and in teams.
Ability to work extra hours as needed on projects.
Excellent communication and networking skills with proficiency in the English language.
A passion for crop production and working with novel plant species.
A passion for scientific investigation and creative thinking.
The work is physical in nature (up to 50 lbs in lifting).
Basic knowledge of horticulture, plant physiology, genetics, and entomology.
Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license.
Your work week:
The Plant Production Technician is full-time non-exempt position which may require flexibility and ability to travel between growing sites as well as working a rotational on-call schedule.
