Job: Estate Gardener, Private Estate, Boston area, MA
Boston area, MA 99999 United States
Commensurate with experience
Christopher Lloyd famously said, “The high-maintenance garden is the most interesting; it gives the most chance to develop different ideas.”
If you’re nodding your head, please consider joining our team. This estate garden on Boston’s North Shore is ferociously and lovingly maintained, with exuberant plantings spilling from a formal framework. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. between 1903-1914, seven acres of plantings are organized as a series of terraces forming distinct garden rooms, with a diverse and sophisticated plant palette ranging from seaside to woodland. In addition to extensive perennial borders there is a water garden, rose garden, herb garden, vegetable and cutting garden, native woodland garden, and many shrub borders.
Although this is an historic property, the plantings are continually evolving, changing from year to year and often within the same season. We are passionate about plants and everyone on the team contributes to our on-going conversation, evaluation, and collaboration on plant choices and combinations.
We also love to get in the dirt and for us maintenance is artistry. Encouraging plants to mingle without smothering each other, editing self-sowers, and staking that is hurricane-proof yet natural -- all require a keen eye, creativity, and finesse.
In 2018 we hope to add two sensational gardeners to our team: vibrant individuals with a discerning eye, dedication to detail, and strong work ethic. A degree or certificate in horticulture is preferred (we speak botanical Latin) but experience is less important than your passion for gardening, desire to learn, and obsession with working to the highest standards. These are year-round positions but, if you prefer, seasonal work and other flexible and unique arrangements are possible.
We offer extremely generous compensation, paid holidays, paid time off, educational opportunities, and an abundance of our own organic vegetables. No overtime, weekend, or holiday work is required. The oceanfront estate is a serenely beautiful and rewarding place to work, with involved and appreciative owners who recognize and reward excellence.
Please email your resume and a detailed cover letter reflecting your interests and expectations to the Head Gardener: email@example.com Thank you.
