Horticulture Technician 2

Job Summary/Basic Function: Employees in this class are under general supervision. This position includes but is not limited to supervising workers of a lower classification, assigning and performing duties on a daily basis, maintenance of foundation plantings, flower beds, and other related horticultural related areas. This position reports directly to the Horticultural supervisor and carries out and assigns duties as directed. The purpose of this position is to perform tasks, make decisions, and act as horticultural technician for ETSU campus and facilities. Such duties may include daily maintenance scheduling and inspection of foundation plantings, flower beds, planters, pesticide and fertilizer application and equipment calibration, irrigation, scheduling, training, supervision and inspecting the work of other employees. Be able to operate safely and efficiently machinery for aeration, topdressing and over seeding, and sprayers. Execute correct pruning and planting techniques in accordance with industry best practices.
Education, training, experience:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to execute integrated pest management practices and perform equipment calibration. Knowledge of proper chemical use including personal protective equipment requirements, paperwork reporting, proper calibration and application, and proper cleaning and disposal of chemical related equipment/supplies. Possess the ability to manage limited resources to accomplish work. Ability to perform math skills to properly calculate fertilizer/pesticide fertilization amounts. Be able to work in all type of weather conditions. Person must possess ability to diagnose and treat diseases related to plants under the horticultural program. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders, and perform strenuous physical work on a daily basis.
Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma required. Prefer Associate Degree in Horticulture or related field or demonstrated work experience. Two years’ experience in horticulture or grounds maintenance required. Individual must obtain category 3 pesticide certification or able to obtain within 6 months. Category 3 license must be maintained during incumbency. Individual must maintain a valid driver’s license during employment.
Work Hours: Overtime to support operations is required. Facilities employees may be required to report at their regularly scheduled times during emergency closures or during inclement weather to perform essential functions including snow removal duties.
